Pick-up in Hammamet, Sousse or Monastir. Drive south.
El Jem
Stop at the Roman amphitheatre, one of the largest in the world and a UNESCO site. Coffee break.
Matmata & lunch
Visit a Berber troglodyte home that is still lived in, then lunch in Matmata. Photo stop at the Hotel Sidi Driss, a Star Wars filming location.
Arrival in Douz
The “gateway to the Sahara”. Check in at your hotel.
Camel ride in the dunes
Camel ride in the Grand Erg Oriental until sunset. Quad biking optional.
Dinner and overnight in Douz
Night at the hotel, or at a desert camp on request.
Departure from Douz
Breakfast, then on the road heading west.
Crossing the Chott el-Djerid
A dead-straight road across the largest salt lake in the Sahara: salt crust, pink reflections and mirages.
Tozeur
Horse-drawn carriage tour of the palm grove and a stroll through the Ouled el-Hadef medina with its brick architecture.
Lunch at your own choice in Tozeur
Taste Deglet Nour dates, the region's speciality.
Return journey
Return via Gafsa and Kairouan, with stops along the way.
