Start with Carthage in the morning
The sites of Carthage, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are spread over several kilometres: visiting by car is much more practical than on foot. A single ticket gives access to several sites.
- Byrsa Hill: remains of the Punic quarter and views over the Gulf of Tunis.
- The Antonine Baths: among the largest Roman baths, right by the sea.
- The Punic ports: the ancient military and merchant harbours of Hannibal's city.
Lunch and a stroll in Sidi Bou Saïd
Perched on the cliff, the village of blue doors and white walls is best explored on foot. Head up to the Café des Délices for mint tea with pine nuts and a view over the bay, then wander the cobbled lanes and craft shops.
Extend your day in the Tunis medina
If time allows, finish in the Tunis medina, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the chechia and perfume souks, the area around the Zitouna Mosque and panoramic rooftop terraces.
Practical tips
- Comfortable shoes: the streets of Sidi Bou Saïd are steep and cobbled.
- Clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the medina.
- Hat and water: there is little shade at the Carthage sites.
A full day by private taxi, departing from your hotel, with an hour-by-hour itinerary.
