October to April: the ideal season
Autumn and spring bring sunny, mild days, perfect for camel rides and sightseeing. In winter the days remain pleasant but the nights in the desert can be cold: bring a warm jacket.
Summer: possible, with precautions
From June to September, temperatures often exceed 40 °C in the afternoon. The excursion is still possible if you plan visits early in the morning and late in the day, with a long break in the shade during the hottest hours.
The International Sahara Festival in Douz
Every winter, usually in late December, Douz hosts the International Sahara Festival: camel races, fantasias, Bedouin music and poetry. A great opportunity to discover desert culture. Check the exact dates before booking.
What to pack?
- A chèche or scarf to protect you from the sun and sand
- Sunglasses and sun cream

How many days should you plan?
From Hammamet, Sousse or Monastir, the desert is more than 5 hours' drive away: allow at least 2 days to make the most of it. Our Sahara & Douz excursion takes in El Jem, Matmata, the dunes of Douz and Tozeur. For the mountain oases, see also Tozeur & Chebika, Tamerza, Mides.
